Future Skills Lab is a workforce readiness program designed to equip young people ages 15 to 24 with the technical knowledge, communication skills, and confidence to thrive in an AI-driven economy. Through hands-on learning, real-world projects, and immersive activities, participants walk away with practical AI skills, a stronger professional voice, and a portfolio-ready capstone project that proves what they can do. Whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur, a first-generation college student, or a young adult figuring out your next move, Future Skills Lab is built for you.
The Challenge
70% of job skills are projected to change by 2030 due to AI. For young people from low-income and underrepresented communities, that shift creates a widening gap between the opportunities available and the preparation needed to access them. Limited exposure to technology, professional networks, and mentorship leaves too many talented young people on the sidelines of an economy that is moving fast. Future Skills Lab exists to close that gap by bringing cutting-edge training and real-world experience directly to the communities that need it most.
Program details
A 5 to 6 week cohort program meeting two hours per week, intentionally hosted in accessible community and campus settings in the Bronx, Newark, Philadelphia, and greater New York City area
Sessions are a mix of hands-on learning, group activities, and individual project time across two core modules:
1) AI Civic Studio — practical training in generative AI tools including building presentations, developing marketing concepts, and prototyping ideas, with a focus on critical thinking, recognizing bias, and applying independent judgment
2) PitchProv — improvisation-based communication training that builds public speaking, collaborative problem-solving, and confidence in unscripted environments
Program culminates in a capstone project where participants develop and present a minimum viable product (MVP) of an AI-enabled solution to a real community challenge, building a portfolio-ready asset in the process
Meals and transportation support provided to reduce barriers to participation
Eligibility
Ages 15 to 24
From low-income or underrepresented communities in the Bronx, Newark, Philadelphia, or greater New York City area
Aspiring entrepreneurs, first-generation college-bound students, or young adults preparing to enter or advance in the workforce
No prior experience with AI or technology required
Participants under the age of 18 must have written permission from a parent or guardian to enroll
